MBlaq Cry Review

Well, I'm not entirely sure why I'm reviewing this song since eatyourkimchi already did and did a fantastic job, as usual. They're freaking hilarious. This is the music video, and right below it is their blog on it. Luckily for you, you don't have to read theirs. They do video blogs!

And now for my thoughts!

I liked their costumes in this music video much better than those horrible glow in the dark extreme sports jump suits they sported in 'Y'. They stuck with black and white or a neutral looking tan. The one guy's shirt that kinda looked like a brown version of a musketeer's tunic was particularly interesting to me and I liked how it showed off his arms, because he has really nice arms. I wasn't digging the big, thick, black gloves. They kind of reminded me of mad scientists in their secret labs. Other than that though, I have nothing bad to say about their costumes.

I can't say I love the exaggerated make up on one eye thing they did, especially with the less than complimentary shades of teal and aqua, but it also didn't look horrendous. The only time the make up got in the way of my enjoyment was very near the end, 3:29 into the video, when blondie (sorry don't know their names) is crying in the rain and his eyes are closed but his make up always makes me think that his eye is open a sliver. I mean, it's white eyeliner encased in black eyeliner so it confuses my eyes for half a second. Just enough to think, hm, I probably would have done that differently.

I really like the dancing. My personal favorite is 35 seconds in, singing (forgive the extreme misspelling here) Oetoke? Oetoke? I probably like it because it seems so sensual to me. I also like the water parts but my room mate Veronica thinks that dancing under water is a very feminine thing to do since only female artists have done it before, so it detracts from the music video for her. She also doesn't like the ripped, wafting cloth strips they're wearing. I don't mind it. I think it makes them look even more ethereal. I almost had a huge issue when the group started to do that arm thing I hated so much in their previous video. This occurs at 1:43. My heart sank the first time I watched it thinking, "Oh guys, it didn't look good the first time. Why are you doing it again??" But luckily they kept it short and ended the move differently so I didn't have to stop the video and walk away from the computer in protest.

I found the song catchy and may, when I don't have any other song's I'm obsessing over, try to learn the words. However, I looked up the english translation and it's not as good as I could have hoped. They're saying how they're crying because the girl left them. There's a line that says "I'm your all, there is no one else" which makes me wonder why she left in the first place. The song is about how passionately in love with her he is, one line in the chorus even stating, "You are my life." It made me think what an incredibly one sided relationship it must have been. Girls don't usually leave a relationship unless there's no hope for it or because there's someone else or the guy cheated. So I'm inclined to think that this song is either incredibly sad because of how deluded the guy is, or that he cheated on her, she left, and now he's remorseful.

And that, ladies and gents, is my take on Cry, by Mblaq.

Ok so normally I am not into ballads because honestly I just wanna dance and feel happy and ballads just don't inspire that glee or that wild charge that other music does. That being said I have to agree that the costumes were very much a step forward for all kpop fashion, especially these guys. Again, I am not a fan of highly colorful, highly chaotic clothes that look like they just put all their costume choices in a huge pile on the floor and then had a free-for-all grabbing whatever they could get their hands on and dressing in that. So yes, 8 points for their costume choices, having 2 points deducted for the big thick black gloves.

The makeup didn't bother me except for the makeup at 1:20 which was a little too feminine/drag queen with the blue and the glitter. I also thought that the blonde haired guys eye was open at 3:29 and that he just had one wonked out eye that wouldn't close because of too much plastic surgery or something but I found it funny rather that disturbing lol

The dancing was all good to me, not counting the underwater stuff which I will get to later. I didn't particularly think the Oeteke? Oeteke? part was sensual. There is raunchy hip thrusting in nearly all kpop songs nowadays and to me this was just their way of raunchy hip thrusting when they are sad instead of like say in SS501's "Love Ya" where they are trying to pick up a girl. So this is mornful hip thrusting. My favorite part of the whole video was at 44-46sec when they throw their arms open and fall to their knees. To me this just displays the emothion of the song so well and conveys everything that they could be thinking like "Why?", pain, sadness, grief, despair, hopelessness and so on. Very nice part.

Them dancing under water... yeah... I'm gonna have to agree with Veronica on this one. It is just way to feminine and I think the tattered clothing actually takes away from the effect by obscuring all the potentially beautiful shapes that they are making underwater. If the clothes were longer and more spread out instead of consentrated into one lump around they guy's body it might have been better.

So for the whole video I give it a 7 out of 10 and might consider adding it to a cd of mine.

Thanks for the review!
